Tuesday, February 7, 2017 - 9:00am to 10:30am
Naomi Waltham-Smith
Department of Music
Williams Hall 440 (Penn Language Center)
This workshop will examine the role of listening in Heidegger's thought and in Derridean deconstruction. Specifically, we'll be discussing whether there is a danger for the ear not only to remain metaphysical but moreover to assume a biopolitical or even fascist form. Closely reading Derrida's essay on "Heidegger's Ear", Naomi will situate this text within her larger book project on The Sound of Biopolitics. At the same time, she urges you to consider the problem of fascist listening in light of the current political climate in the US and of global Trumpism more generally.
