Professor Stephan teaches in the Department of German at the Humboldt-Universität, Berlin, Germany. One of the most prominent feminist literary scholars in Germany, Professor Stephan's field of expertise is German literature of the eighteenth century to the present, with particular emphasis on women's literary and cultural traditions, as well as on gender theory. Professor Stephan is the author of numerous books and articles: she has published widely on the construction of femininity and masculinity in eighteenth-century literature, on the impact of the French Revolution on gender and literature, on mythological figurations of femininity, on women and the history of psychoanalysis, and on memory and the Holocaust. In addition, she has edited many volumes crucial to the emergence of feminist literary studies in Germany, and has co-edited two introductions to the field of gender studies. Professor Stephan also established an interdisciplinary program in gender studies at the Humboldt-Universität.
The visit by Professor Stephan has been made possible by FEW (Fund to Encourage Women), and is co-sponsored by the Department of Classical Studies, the Department of Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies, and the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures.
