How Much of the Netherlands is Below Sea Level?

With the support of a Penn Undergraduate Mentored Research Program grant, Professor Simon Richter, Becky Lee, Jenesis Cochrane, and Justine Seo created an animated video about the remarkable fact that many Dutch people, including some Dutch agencies, don’t really know. The video explains how the Netherlands keeps its citizens’ feet dry, offers two theories about the general confusion, and provides the official answer about how much of the country is below sea level—for the time being. With the possibility of up to 2 meters of sea level rise by 2100 and 3-5 meters by 2150, it’s anyone’s guess how much of the Netherlands will be below sea level in the future.
