Liliane Weissberg has been named the Ellie and Herbert D. Katz Distinguished Fellow at Penn’s Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies, and will join a research group on “The Jewish Home: Dwelling on the Domestic, the Familial, and the Lived-In.” Weissberg has already published much on Jewish homes in Berlin in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries as loci of conversation, music making, and literary production. In the past few years, she has shifted her focus to Vienna, and studied the distinction between private and public spaces in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries there. In addition to tracing Vienna’s Jewish culture, she has also been particularly concerned with the life and works of Sigmund Freud. Both interests will come together in Weissberg’s project on “Freud’s Vienna, Freud’s Office, Freud’s Home.”
