Minors

German Minor: 6 c.u.

As per SAS policy, all courses counting toward minors must be taken for a letter grade, not Pass/Fail.

 

Required Courses: 2 c.u.

GRMN 0400, Intermediate German II, “Bewegungen: Contemporary Social, Cultural, and Political Movements in the German-Speaking World”

  • Students who place out of the language requirement must replace GRMN 0400 with any elective taught in German.
  • Students can receive credit for GRMN 0400 with a 5 on the AP, a 5 on the IB German A Higher Level, or a 6 or a 7 on the IB German B Higher Level.

 

GRMN 1500: Texts and Contexts

  • Students can receive credit for GRMN 1500 with a 6 or a 7 on the IB German A Higher Level.

Electives: 4 c.u.

At least 1 c.u. of electives must be a course taught in German in the department above GRMN 1500.

 

The remaining 3 electives can be any combination of: 

  • Additional courses taught in German at the 2000-level or higher.
  • Courses taught in German at approved study abroad programs.
  • GRMN 4999: Independent Study.
  • Major-related courses taught in English, either in FIGS or in other departments.
  • Coursework in another foreign language relevant to the student’s interests.
  • First-Year Seminars counted retroactively.

 

 

German Minors declared prior to Fall 2024

 

The minor in German requires six credit units above GRMN 0400 (Intermediate German II). Students must choose at least three classes in German at or above the 2000-level, including GRMN 2100 (formerly GRMN 203). Three credits may be taken in an approved study-abroad program or taught in English.
